On 16th January 2nd Armored Division of the 1st US Army and 11th Armored Division of the 3rd US Army meet up at Houffalize in the Ardennes and begin to attack towards the German border. Montgomery decides to withdraw British XXX Corps from the Ardennes to the Netherlands in preparation for the crossing of the Rhine.

16 Tues - Night out with Ronnie and Johnnie Heitman at Herboz von Brabant.
17 Wed – Duty officer at Château.
19 Fri – Dinner with Sintobins, Ronnie, Brian & Ted Oliver
21 Sun – Sintobin’s with ‘ditto’ signs down to the 27th
Sandy Handley recalls:
“January 1945 was nearly out and our stint in the Ardennes was finished and we went back to Iseghem to renew friendships we had made earlier.”
