12th July 1944 – in Operation Heu-Aktion 40 to 50,000 Polish, Belarusian and Ukrainian children are kidnapped and taken for slave labour in Germany. Approximately 400,000 children from all over Europe were abducted by the Nazis during the war, more than half from Poland. If they survived the harsh journey to Germany some young, ‘racially valuable’ children were selected for cultural indoctrination. (In Poland education was strictly limited as part of the initiative to eradicate the cultural identity of the Polish.) Others were sent to forced labour or concentration camps and many were murdered.
