WAR DIARY of 61 Recce Regt RAC November 1944
– Lt Col P.H.A. Brownrigg
Date 20th Place ELST
‘Last night was uneventful. “C” Squadron were troubled by a Spandau which fires straight down the autobahn and interferes with their admin arrangements. The area was engaged by Maching Guns of 2 CHESHIRE (2nd Cheshire Battalion) and was silenced.
The Commanding Officer attended a conference at Divisional HQ this afternoon. It is an understatement to say that the news was a bombshell. The Division is to return to the UK as a training Division on a greatly reduced establishment. It is planned to disband several units of which the Regiment is one. It may be possible to lessen or even avert the blow. For the meantime nothing is being said.
Mining and wiring continued at a good pace today. Spasmodic shelling and mortaring of the Regiment’s forward positions continued.’
