WAR DIARY of 61 Recce Regt RAC October 1944
– Lt Col P.H.A. Brownrigg
Date 16th Place APPELTERN (west of Nijmegen, near the Maas)
After another uneventful night the enemy were again active this morning. At 0900 hrs a “B” Squadron outpost at 441669 was engaged by an enemy SP gun from the North bank of the WAAL. The outpost was hit and the Troop Commander, Lieutenant A.R.V.STONE*, was slightly wounded. Enemy movement has been on a reduced scale today. He is making use of all available cover in his efforts to avoid detection. Despite this, five men crawling along the road at 395633 and men digging at 462691 were fired on with good results. At 1900 hrs it was learned that 43 Recce Regiment** are to relieve us tomorrow. Our future role is not yet known.
*see 'Belgium' for the action that earned Lt. Albert Stone the Military Cross.
