Eric Brewer was already involved in the preparation for 61st Recce’s next engagement - Operation Market Garden:
Sept 15th – “Moved on to another canal where we took up outpost. Stayed very quiet but about 2 o’clock in morning there was quite a few Spandaus fishing to see if there was any one on the other side. We just kept low and let the bullets whim over our heads. Plenty of voices can be heard, also vehicle movements."
Sept 16th - "Still in same position can see Gerry walking about; also thirty of them in a slit trench no more than 100 yards away. Wish we could fire but cannot as it would let Gerry know that he was being observed and he must think no one is on the other side of canal. Saw a chap come up with bucket and bring food and mail, also heard plenty of movement." (From Eric Brewer’s diary by kind permission of Derek Brewer and his family.)
