20th July 1944 – an assassination attempt on Hitler fails when Colonel Count von Stauffenberg and other German conspirators plant a bomb in the conference room of Hitler's headquarters at Rastenburg, in East Prussia.The bomb explodes but Hitler survives and meets with Mussolini at the Wolfsschanze that same afternoon.
The 61st Reconnaissance Regiment are doing infantry work at Briquessard Wood, near Caumont. Eric Brewer wrote in his diary for 20th July: "Still firing at us - Gerry threw grenade at Sgt Dedman." (From Eric Brewer’s Diary by kind permission of Derek Brewer and his family.)
