I’m very sorry to announce that Sandy Handley passed away recently.
He died aged 94 on 21st October 2014 after a short illness.
Sandy served first in the Royal West Kents and saw active service in the 61st Reconnaissance Regiment and the 52nd (Lowland) Recce Regiment.
Anthony Rampling and Sandy Handley at Longueval cemetary remember their fallen comrades
Sandy's paintings of army life are an important witness to the life of the Recce men and his stories from the battlefront of the Second World War have enlivened this blog. I am extremely grateful that he took the time and trouble to record them and that his good friend and comrade, Anthony Rampling, was able to share them with me.

I hope that you too have enjoyed Sandy’s memories and will also remember Sandy on this day of remembrance for all who gave their life in service.

Personal recommendation - in commemoration of the start of the First World War:
Centenary Words & Music Of The Great War matches the remarkable poetry of those war years against the music of the era, along with new compositions inspired by the war.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
