WAR DIARY of 61 Recce Regt RAC October 1944
– Lt Col P.H.A. Brownrigg
Date 20th Place DRIEL
'Today has been comparatively quiet and no enemy movement was observed until 1405 hrs when “C” Squadron reported fresh digging in area 7076. “C” Squadron area was shelled spasmodically from 1420 to 1500 hrs and in response to numerous SHELLREPS a hostile battery at 644785 was dealt with by our medium artillery.
At 1610 hrs “C” Squadron engaged what appeared to be a periscope on the railway embankment 705755 with light machine gun fire. The result, a loud explosion, sheet of flame and black smoke indicated that a mine had been hit.
Another small enemy patrol was encountered by one of “A” Squadron’s patrols moving WEST along the river bank at 679762. A few shots were exchanged without any conclusive results. Nothing further was seen though our patrol remained in the farm at 678763 until 0530 hrs 21 Oct.'
Eric Brewer wrote in his diary for 20th October:
“Shifted tonight to the other side of Arnhem. Gerry 100 yards away, one was 25 yds. A few grenades etc.”
The next day he was “cut on outpost tonight – Gerry throwing grenades over our positions and plenty of Spando fire but otherwise quiet. Can see Gerry walking about, also his outpost.” (From ‘Beaten Paths are Safest’ by Roy Howard, Brewin Books 2004)
