15th August 1944 – beginning of Operation Dragoon, the Allied landings in Southern France. French commandos of the French 1st Army, forces of the US 7th Army and the Allied Airborne Taskforce landed between Toulon and Nice on the French Riviera (having set up a successful deception that they were heading for Genoa). 151,000 Allied troops (mainly from the Italian front) landed on the Côte d’Azur.
